Skype founder Nicklas Zennstrom told the Dublin Web Summit

that Ireland is one of the best countries for setting up a technology company. Mr Zennstrom cited business-friendly laws and the availability of skilled workers among reasons for his belief. More than 1,200 people attended the two-day summit.

What has happened to Ireland in recent weeks almost beggars belief. Almost, but not quite. After all, there are economists who have been predicting the inevitability of all of this since before the ill-fated ‘cheapest bank bailout in history’—the Irish government’s blanket guarantee of depositors and bond-holders back in 2008. The snowballing effect of steeper and steeper estimates for the total cost of this bailout freaked the bond markets (on whom countries rely for money they can’t raise in taxes) to such an extent that the return on a ten year Irish bond

8,000 join the Dole last month in Ireland PDF Print E-mail

As the unemployment crisis continues in Ireland the Government has reported that 8,000 more people joined the dole line in July. Official figures are at 452,500 people claiming unemployed benefits in July which is up 34,400 from last year at that time.

A new network aimed at uniting Irish pubs in the diaspora has started up and is planning a convention in September. Irish Pubs Global is aimed at the owners and managers of Irish bars around the world outside of Ireland, and is creating a community of owners and managers for sharing knowledge, building links with Ireland, local and global promotion, and promoting standards in Irish pubs.
