For the third successive year Jack was the most popular name given to boys born in 2009. This was followed by Seán, Daniel, Conor, James, Ryan, Adam, Michael, Alex and Luke.
For girls Sophie moved up to the top spot, just ahead of Ava, Emma, Sarah, Grace, Emily, Katie, Lucy, Aoife and Chloe.
A much wider range of names are used for girls, which meant that Sophie, the top girl's name, wouldn't have made the top five in the boys. Sophie was the name given to 633 girls during the year while 1,061 boys were named Jack and James, in fifth place, was given 705 times.
